In Love With Death

Less strident than Coulter is Peggy Noonan who is mighty unhappy over at OpinionJournal and calls out the hypocrisy of the Left in brilliant fashion. Buckle up:

Why are they so committed to this woman's death?

They seem to have fallen half in love with death.

I do not understand their certainty. I don't "know" that any degree of progress or healing is possible for Terri Schiavo; I only hope they are. We can't know, but we can "err on the side of life." How do the pro-death forces "know" there is no possibility of progress, healing, miracles? They seem to think they know. They seem to love the phrases they bandy about: "vegetative state," "brain dead," "liquefied cortex."

I do not understand why people who want to save the whales (so do I) find campaigns to save humans so much less arresting. I do not understand their lack of passion. But the save-the-whales people are somehow rarely the stop-abortion-please people.

The PETA people, who say they are committed to ending cruelty to animals, seem disinterested in the fact of late-term abortion, which is a cruel procedure performed on a human.

I do not understand why the don't-drill-in-Alaska-and-destroy-its-prime-beauty people do not join forces with the don't-end-a-life-that-holds-within-it-beauty people.

I do not understand why those who want a freeze on all death penalty cases in order to review each of them in light of DNA testing--an act of justice and compassion toward those who have been found guilty of crimes in a court of law--are uninterested in giving every last chance and every last test to a woman whom no one has ever accused of anything.

There are passionate groups of women in America who decry spousal abuse, give beaten wives shelter, insist that a woman is not a husband's chattel. This is good work. Why are they not taking part in the fight for Terri Schiavo? Again, what explains their lack of passion on this? If Mrs. Schiavo dies, it will be because her husband, and only her husband, insists she wanted to, or would want to, or said she wanted to in a hypothetical conversation long ago. A thin reed on which to base the killing of a human being.

Terri Schiavo may well die. No good will come of it. Those who are half in love with death will only become more red-fanged and ravenous.

And those who are still learning--our children--oh, what terrible lessons they're learning. What terrible stories are shaping them. They're witnessing the Schiavo drama on television and hearing it on radio. They are seeing a society--their society, their people--on the verge of famously accepting, even embracing, the idea that a damaged life is a throwaway life.

Our children have been reared in the age of abortion, and are coming of age in a time when seemingly respectable people are enthusiastic for euthanasia. It cannot be good for our children, and the world they will make, that they are given this new lesson that human life is not precious, not touched by the divine, not of infinite value.

Once you "know" that--that human life is not so special after all--then everything is possible, and none of it is good. When a society comes to believe that human life is not inherently worth living, it is a slippery slope to the gas chamber. You wind up on a low road that twists past Columbine and leads toward Auschwitz. Today that road runs through Pinellas Park, Fla.

And that's the short-sighted, selfish, hypocritical and evil nature of the Left and with every "victory" they are able to gain, the more likely society will coarsen and degrade and collapse ever more.

The fact that they'll be consumed by the ruins of their own initiation is cold comfort for we'll all be suffering alongside them, too.

"On the other side of this debate, one would assume there is an equally well organized and passionate group of organizations deeply committed to removing Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. But that's not true. There's just about no one on the other side."

The bizarre passion of the pull-the-tube people."

What Peggy Noonan, and Ann Coulter, and you and all the rest of the right-wing can't grasp is that no one's "pro-death" here. Most people don't wish death on Terri Schiavo, but most people understand instinctively that today it's Michael Schiavo's decision that's being second-guessed and tomorrow it could be theirs.

If I slipped into a state similar to Terri's tomorrow, I have no paperwork that says "I don't want to live like that". My wife understands; it is an unspoken agreement between us. She'll do the right thing. Suppose my parents disagree and raise a stink? It goes to court. There is no paper trail. I must rely on the court to allow my wife (who knows me best) to do what I want.

I don't want you, Sean Hannity or Tom Delay stepping in to save me because you believe in the "culture of life".

-That- is why most people are not on your side. You're arguing an abstract; an ideological point. Those without an agenda can put themselves in the shoes of both Michael AND Terri. For most it is a wrenching personal issue. They understand that this is a sad and terrible thing, and the decision is best left to those it affects the most.

And that's all I have to say on the matter. It's your blog, so feel free to have the last word, screech about liberals, the "culture of death" and prove my point.

Question: If your wife took advantage of your impaired condition to shack up with another man and proceeded to breed with him, would you appreciate it if no one looked askance at her zeal to have you unplugged?

Quit pretending to act as if Mike and Terri had such a loving bond and we should butt out and respect it and all that rot. With the final rejection by the courts, the way is paved for Terri to suffer a miserable demise that a dog wouldn't be allowed to endure and for all the high-minded blather you've spewed, it doesn't change what this is: Spousal homicide.

Feminism has just been set back a thousand years, but as long as they can choose abortion whenever they want - more culture of death stuff, ya know? - then they're quite willing to be cows for slaughter at man's whim.

Isn't it interesting that the totems of "choice" for the Left tend to result in death of the helpless? Whether a fetus or a brain-damaged woman or the elderly, the only choice your side endorses is the one that ends life. That's not me saying abortion should be banned, it's just calling a shovel a shovel. Your side chooses death 10 out of 9 times.

If the Right wants school choice, retirement investment choice, parental choice or any other non-fatal rights to choose, the Left howls them down and runs to the courts to deny them any choice other than what the Left wishes to jam down everyone's throats.

The GOP may've been hypocrites for trying to meddle, but your side will NEVER allow actual choice or democracy to prevail if they can prevent it, will they? (Honestly.)

I'm sorry, I know I said I was done, but I thought I should answer your (rhetorical) question.

If I am incapacitated, I want my wife to end my life. My only concern with she does with the rest of hers is that it should bring her happiness.

Not that it's any concern of yours, Mr. "Libertarian". Mind your own fucking business.

Then put it in writing and go with the deity of your choosing.

My question was based on the presumption that you didn't want to die, but she decided you should.

That's what's underlying all this hoohaw - the rat bastard husband has denied her treatment and proper examination that could've proven his point, preferring to simply SAY that she wanted to die instead of PROVING that she's beyond hope or help.

Try as you might to cast this as a privacy issue, it's in reality a question of whether spouses have the right to have their inconvenient lesser-halves whacked.

You've chosen your side. Thanks for sharing.
